Limón

(Great Arboretum Cookout, Washington D.C.)

How should you call her hand
as she lifts the lemon
and lyrically
squeezes it between her fingers?

The languid circling
of citrus around
a pan of sauteed garlic
kale leaves and mascarpone cheese
should be called
a sensuous craft -- mastered
by a sly, slender goddess.
But simply

it becomes slippage,
not of her movements
but caused by her movements
on the part of the agent
who was assigned to guard
the veiled woman fingering
her worry beads.
Instead, he turned away
to watch this seductive cook.

Placed under the pavilion roof,
striped awning against the fringed awning
of mimosa trees, she'll pivot on heels
and face you if she hears
Limón, the echo of her name, the striking pulse
of her poise. the gemstone known
to dissolve any suspicious thoughts.
