A mourning dove’s beak
is threaded with vine;
and a Chinese girl stands
clinging to thoughts of the bird --
its song, its half-woven nest.
Softly, she steps back
watching her shadowed skirts
fall between ferns
and sunlight perusing
lesions on a warehouse door.
Is this nature’s way
of scattering I Ching?She wonders
and calculates what secrets
a fan of leaves might hide,
what scars linger
inside waiting to etch
the heart of another seamstress
in love with the boss.
