Roland Petit Stages A Farewell Scene

Hands, knees and foreheads pressed

firmly together, two bodies combine

in dance, silhouette of an orchid

posed to catch light falling through

the metro's glass arbor, hot house

of steam and stories perpetuated

by people slipping into thought

or trains near dusk. What stands out

is this sudden flush of sky, deep pitch

of emotion as lovers turn inward

before the last departure

for the coast. The moon setting

her silver on the sea.
