Catalyst

On a day when you 're driving toward
another reason to curse the planet,
your mind an artillery sphere
aimed at black holes and burnt-out stars,
this scene takes hold of you, its litter
palpitating softly
within fibrous stems of sage.
Whether blown there by wind
or cast aside by hand,
the plastic bag
slants forward in lithe folds
of white, a veiled shadow
appearing before road and field.
Belladonna of the desert
that draws your glance
from a wide turn left, calms this heat
and realigns the nerves
like stone beads on a wire
galvanized for prayer.
