The Golfer's Wife Returns For His Match In New Orleans

Rose-veined leaves and a white row
of bistro chairs claim the platform. Special guests
will soon arrive.

The course breathes downwind;
you are on the grass swinging
a titanium blade. Mowers trim the lawn
making the greens soft
faster, more receptive
to impossible odds.

So maybe when you turn
toward the stands and see a blonde
Venus de Milo with arms
nodding her lover's nod

you'll believe the dead rise-up, leaving
their pale statuary,
defying grief
sculptured so piously in stone.
