Riding side saddle on a hill, plumed
with her wide skirts of shadow
falling gray,
Autumn becomes
the empress in retreat
away from wrinkled leaves, mushrooms
swollen on the trunk
like varicose veins
and frosted water.
Her mirror distorted, so coldly
glared or too kind to show
how the face of a season
has saddened, aged.
