Portrait Of The Elusive

Rumors persist and birch leaves
linger on the branch, pale as the hair
of the woman watching a deer
run, startled by an awareness
of its own shadow.

She swirls her martini glass
with a long-gloved hand, wondering
if the olive is pitted or hollow,

if a darker self
stares at her from behind
the moon's half-mask.
